MONSTERSIGHTING :: #1: Godzilla (1954)

Borrowing the name of the TNT movie block from the 1990s, MonsterVision is going to be a series of posts dedicated to my musings about monster movies of all sorts. And none would make for a better start to the series than the introductory film from the big guy himself: Godzilla.

Though I have come to appreciate the movie much more as an adult, I was never much a fan when I was a kid; Not because it was black & white though, growing up in the 90s meant you were perpetually exposed to media from the time before color film with Nick at Nite always playing returns of sitcoms from that era. But no, my lack of fondness had more to do with the fact the film was a solitary romp for Godzilla. I craved monster battles, which is why I preferred (and still do) Godzilla Raids Again to the original film.

 I didn't own this particular VHS copy, but it's the one I remember always seeing available for rent at the local rental place.

The one I owned came from the 1997/1998 re-release that came out in anticipation of the first American movie in May of '98.

It's a great movie and will forever be one of the most important films in the kaiju genre, but it comes nowhere close to being one of my favorites.
