Game Power! Sonic the Hedgehog

Blue streak speeds by...

While I don't have a ReCollection for the Sonic the Hedgehog series yet, I want to post the one-off for Sonic the Hedgehog 1 on the Sega Genesis. Since this will be an image-heavy post, I'll be hiding the bulk of the post behind the Break, so hit that Keep Reading button if you wanna see the meat of this episode.

I think like probably a lot more people than we'll ever know, the original Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't most people's introduction to the character. That honor likely belongs to Sonic 2 in the same way that Animal Crossing New Leaf probably stands as the bulk of the Animal Crossing fanbase' introduction to the series, just out of shear popularity that it as a sequel attained by word of mouth from those that played the previous game(s).

But enough about that for now. Let's get to Mobius and bop that Robotnik!

S-E-G-A

Good 'ol Green Hill Zone; The World 1-1 of the Sonic series. Recycled more times than a second-rate grocery store plastic bag.

I wasn't about to allow Robotnik to get his hands on the six(?!) chaos emeralds, so I made sure to grab enough rings for the special world at the end of each act.

Robotnik finally shows himself at the end of act 3. He came out swinging with his Egg Wrecker; A giant swinging wrecking ball. Too bad for him that he was just a tad bit too slow at swinging it.

My adventure took me to Marble Zone next, a large collection of ruins set within a lava field. In also dealing with Badniks, I also had to avoid spikes, crushers, and surprising no one, lava.

Robotnik caught up with me in his Egg Scorcher, which I gotta hand it to him, was a bit more efficient than the Wrecker. Not suspending himself over floating platforms made it a bit more difficult to nail him, but he went down in time and I sent another one of Robuttnik's creations to the scrap yard.

Wasting no time, I dashed into the Spring Yard that lay a few hundred miles away from the volatile Marble Ruins is the Spring Yard, where all good springs go to... do something.

And of course wouldn't you know it? Robotnik was there too with his Egg Stinger; A less-than-effective weapon that I guess wasn't intended to be used that way.

Hidden within the Spring Yard was the next zone: Labyrinth Zone! Sadly, David Bowie was nowhere to be found for questions.

But ya know what? I got the sixth and final chaos emerald so at least that's no longer a concern.

Robotnik didn't even try. I think he was just banking on me drowning. Not today you egg-shaped weirdo!

Breaking out of the Labyrinth zone, through a sewer entrance, and onto the streets of Starlight Zone; The city at the base of Robotnik's hidden base! He awaited me at the end with his Egg Spiker machine that, with the proper timer, I could hit each time he hit the lowest point of his hover motion. Easy peasy.

Finally, the Scrap Brain zone; A zone that... turns your brains to scrap. How devious!

I came face to face with the doctor at the end of act 2, but he had set a trap for me and sent me falling down into the factory's sewer system. After a bit of a trek, I finally re-emerged near where he had dropped me.

Into the Final Zone!

Robotnik wasn't messing around this time. He hit me with his ultimate weapon: The Egg Crusher! I never knew which platform he was going to emerge from and whether I was going to be on the right side to hit him.

After a long battle, I finally chased him out of his machine. As he was feeling, I landed the final blow that destroyed his egg mobile once and for all.

With Robotnik defeated, the chaos emeralds gathered and the animals freed from their Badnik prisons, the day was saved and we could all rejoice.

I'm sure Robuttnik is fuming.
