Finished reading The Spirit by Thomas Page yesterday, and while I'm stewing in the quiet period between books, I thought I'd type up some of my thoughts on the book.
Open Spoiler Discussion
Overall, I enjoyed it. It wasn't the best Bigfoot/Sasquatch novel I've read. It'll take a lot to overthrow the fantastic piece of body torture-slash-creature feature that was Hunter Shea's 'Creature', but this book was a rather interesting take on the Bigfoot mythos.
The species of bigfeet presented here was, for the majority of the book, confused for a Native American's spirit from which he was hoping to earn his name. The whole thing kicked off once John Moon, the native who had (at some point in his history, post Vietnam war) been diagnosed with schizophrenia, encountered the Bigfoot's 'talking' dog, which had just so happened to have the same exact voice as the Native.
It was a wild book from that perspective, and just about every time I started feeling like, "Okay, this isn't doing too much for me," a new unexpected plot thread would be introduced, keeping me on my toes and leading me along once more. The characters outside of Moon and the bigfeet weren't terribly interesting nor were they meant to be rooted for, outside of Martha and the park ranger.
I'd definitely recommend it. There are certainly better books out there that do far less interesting things with the Bigfoot creature than this one, but it won't leave any long-lasting impression on you or anything.
