Like a Let's Play, but told from within the game itself! |
Eventually, I'll have to write a ReCollection post to go more in-depth regarding the title of this series, but in a nutshell, "Game Power!" was something I used to record as a youngling with my camcorder. The "shows" would first start in real life and I'd get a distress signal from whatever video game I was currently wanting to record, stating that the world was in danger and that I was needed inside the game itself to save it. By shouting the words "Game Power!" I was transported - ala Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad - to the digital world where I set off on a quest to defeat the villain and save the game.
So that is how I wanted to approach my Let's Play! series, by repurposing the idea and toning it down a bit. This gives me the opportunity to practice more creative writing outside of Secret of Memoria, which is part of the reason I created this blog to begin with.
So without further ado, here's our first trip into the video game world!
I really wish that I could remember when I first rented the game, but the only few memories I have of the game are from a rental where I had messed around with the save file right before the final boss, which I failed at horribly.
The game is visually beautiful with large, wonderfully animated sprites and overworld graphics.
Ali arrives on the beach to the south of a small fishing village. Almost immediately the village is attacked by a small group of soldiers and monsters sent to take back the Gold Armlet that Ali had found in an off-shore cave.
Visiting the king, he basically repeats what I have already guessed, then gives me a key and sends me off to the eastern water palace in search of Dytto, the water sprite.
The femur-wielding giant rat-like creatures are some of my favorite monsters in the game. I don't believe that we have any context as to what they are as far as I know, but I personally like to believe them to be a subterranean race of creatures that were manipulated by the antagonist to militarize against Ali.
Along my way to the water palace, I happened across a small group of creatures dancing around a campfire beside a stream. They didn't seem particularly interested in me, so I let them be and continued on my way to my destination.
Once inside, I immediately ran into a roadblock: A locked door, actually. Thankfully whoever had originally sealed this place up left the key nearby. Deeper in however was a different story, as monsters had invaded the ancient building, which meant I had to spar with a few monsters here and there in order to get back the key in order to progress.
Waiting for me at the very end of the dungeon was the biggest monster I've faced yet: "The Giant Claw". It wasn't too difficult to slay thankfully, especially after severing its namesake. A few more strikes to the side of its head and it was out for good.
After defeating the giant enemy crab, the door to Dytto's altar opened.
